EKURA Donate Cell
Phones for the 911 Phone Bank
Members of the EKU Retirees Association
donating cell phones to the 911 Cell Phone Bank coordinated by
the office of Madison County Sheriff Nelson O'Donnell were:
First row (l. to r.) Joan Kleine, Jill Allgier, Carrie Kline,
Ralph Thompson, Peggy Stanaland, Nancy Kenner, Mary Kay Kasitz,
Back row (l. to r.) Hal Holmes, Kathy Holmes, Carolyn Siegel,
Jay Riggs, Jill Allgier, Karl Park, Dot Kirkpatrick, Bobbie Clawson,
Ken Clawson, and EKURA president Willi Walker.
The EKURA donated a large number of cell
phones to 911 Cell Phone Bank at its June 20th meeting. Cell phones
were then taken to the office of Madison County Sheriff Nelson
O'Donnell to benefit violence victims and seniors.
Sheriff O'Donnell said that this program
gives abused spouses and seniors a means of contacting authorities
on these 911 enabled cell phones. He said these phones are sent
to the 911 Cell Phone Bank and the phone bank then provides to
the sheriff's office an equal number of emergency cell phones
that have been refurbished and cleaned along with accessories
and instructions.
Under the partnership, free emergency 911
cell phones will be provided to those in need. The National Sheriffs'
Association also participates in this project which provides criminal
justice practitioners useful resources, technical assistance,
and congressional advocacy.
Over 400 law enforcement and victim services
agencies across the country actively collect cell phones to benefit
their emergency cell phone programs.
Currently, over 2,000 cell phones a month
are being distributed nationwide by the 911 Cell Phone Bank and
its partners. Dr. Glen Kleine, the immediate past president of
the EKURA said that the donations help sheriff's offices keep
up with the increasing demand by abused spouses and seniors.
